I Hit A Deer!? What Should I Do?
Living in Pennsylvania deer are extremely common, and so are accidents with deer. Below is your quick checklist of things to do after you hit a deer.
1. Calm Down After Hitting A Deer
The first and most important thing to do is calm down. Breathe. You are okay. Once I was riding with my sister and she hit a deer. Almost immediately she was shaking and did not know what to do. Seeing she was panicking I told her to calm down and pull over.
2. Safely Pull Over
After hitting a deer you should safely pull over. Make sure you are clear of the road and have your 4-ways on to forewarn traffic of the deer (if it is still in the road) and to avoid being hit.
3. Call The Police To Report Accident With Deer
It is always a good idea to report the incident. You are not required to in most states. Although, calling the police can be helpful when filing your car insurance claim. If the deer is on the road you should contact the local authorities so additional accidents do not occur from the deer blocking the roadway. If the deer is no longer in the road, it is up to your discretion.
4. Document The Deer Accident With Notes & Pictures
Take pictures of the damage to your vehicle. Do not pull the deer hair off of your vehicle. This helps prove that you hit a deer and provides evidence.
5. Contact Your Insurance Agency
In the event of hitting a deer, you should contact your insurance agency. If you have comprehensive car insurance you are probably covered for the accident.
